Steelhead Fishing Report 12/1-12/3

For the last few years, the first weekend of December has been one of the best times of the year to steelhead fish. Unfortunately, history did not repeat itself this year. ¬†After having a great couple days on the river last week, we figured with the warmer temps that this weekend would be “lights out.” Not so much.

Took Friday off and pretty much had the river to ourselves until the afternoon hours. We caught one and lost one right away. With that type of action after just a handful of casts, we thought we were in for a special day. Not sure if the bite turned off or the fish were just not around. We did manage two more fish to hand with one midday and the other during the last hour of the day.

Saturday was slow. Conditions were perfect but the bite just wasn’t on. I’m starting to think there was a good push of fish 2 weeks ago and a lot of those fish have wised up. We had a few that spit the hook or broke off in the evening. Not giving up was the difference between finding a few fish to play late in the day or going home empty handed. Pretty happy to get my buddy, Brian, into his first steelhead and what I believe is his biggest brown!

Sunday was just a half day. My wife landed a nice steelhead and that was good enough for me. We are getting a shot of rain as I write this but I don’t think it’ll end up doing much. The river is starting to get pretty clear and the extended forecast looks nasty cold. I wouldn’t say the rivers around Michigan are “loaded” right now but there are definitely a decent number of fish in the river systems that should make for some decent winter fishing. Watch for those days where the temperatures get above 30 degrees. Good luck and tight lines!
